Microdosing Coaching vs. Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy: Which Path Is Right for You?

Person journaling with tea, considering microdosing coaching vs. therapy

In this post, we cover...

I get some version of this question almost every week: “Should I do microdosing, or should I do the full journey?”

It’s a valid question, and it also misses a deeper layer beneath the microdosing versus a journey question. Both microdosing and psilocybin facilitation can be done in either a coaching or therapeutic framework. But, those are two different containers, built for two different kinds of work, and knowing which one you actually need will save you a lot of second-guessing, and can help you find the right practitioner for you.

Here, I’m breaking down the difference between microdosing coaching vs. psilocybin-assisted therapy (which also integrates microdosing), helping you determine the path that feels right for you.

Microdose Coaching: ongoing, or as-needed, non-clinical support

Microdose coaching is built around sub-perceptual amounts of psilocybin or San Pedro, taken on a regular, structured schedule. You stay fully functional. Nobody watching you would know anything had shifted, except maybe that you seem a little steadier, a little less reactive, a little more like yourself.

This is a coaching relationship, and it’s worth being clear about what that does and doesn’t mean. There’s no diagnosis. There’s no treatment plan. We’re not treating a condition, and I’m not acting as your therapist inside this container, even on the days I’m also wearing that hat with other clients. What we are doing is building a personalized protocol together, tracking what’s actually changing over the weeks, and troubleshooting together instead of you guessing alone at 11pm with a forum thread open in another tab.

Coaching tends to be the right entry point when:

  • You’re curious about psilocybin microdosing specifically, and you’re not looking for clinical treatment
  • You’re managing something ongoing, like everyday stress, mild anxiety, or a general sense of wanting to feel more like yourself, and you want sustainable support woven into your actual week
  • You want structure and accountability without opening up a full clinical process
  • You want to build trust with the medicine gradually, in a lower-cost, lower-commitment container

Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy: ongoing clinical work, at whatever dose the work actually calls for

Here’s the part that tends to surprise people: Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy isn’t solely defined by a big, all-day journey. It’s defined by the clinical relationship underneath it. As your therapist, I complete an actual clinical assessment with you, and we build a treatment plan around what you’re working through, the same way we would with any other therapeutic modality. From there, the dose is a clinical decision, not a default. Some treatment plans call for microdosing, integrated directly into our therapeutic work together. Others call for a medium dose, or a full macro journey, depending on what we’re actually trying to move through and how you respond along the way. And in many situations, we’re working with a variety of different doses and plant medicines in a way that is uniquely suited to you.

That means it’s entirely possible to be microdosing as part of Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy. The difference from Microdose Coaching isn’t the substance or the amount. It’s that in therapy, the dosing is embedded inside a clinical relationship, with an actual diagnosis or clinical formulation behind it, a treatment plan we’re both working from, and ongoing therapeutic processing of what comes up, session to session. In coaching, none of that clinical structure exists. It’s support and structure, not treatment.

This path tends to be the right fit when:

Calm, plant-filled therapy space in Colorado
  • You’re carrying something specific that talk therapy alone hasn’t been able to move, like grief, trauma, or a pattern that keeps repeating no matter how much insight you already have
  • You want a licensed clinician actively involved in deciding dose, pacing, and approach, based on a real treatment plan, not a general protocol
  • You’re looking for therapeutic processing alongside the medicine work, not just tracking and troubleshooting

Microdosing Coaching vs Psilocybin Therapy: The Real Difference

It’s not dose. It’s clinical versus non-clinical. Coaching means no diagnosis and no treatment plan; it’s a support relationship built around a microdosing protocol. Therapy means an actual clinical assessment, a treatment plan built around your specific concerns, and a licensed therapeutic relationship, whatever dose that treatment plan ultimately calls for: microdose, medium dose, or full journey.

Both paths still come with real screening, but the screening does different work in each. In coaching, screening is about safety: ruling out contraindications like certain medications, cardiovascular concerns, or a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder. In therapy, that same safety screening happens, but it’s folded into something bigger, a full clinical assessment that also shapes the treatment plan itself, not just whether it’s safe to proceed. Any coach or therapist who skips the safety piece, regardless of which path you choose, is not someone I’d trust with the work.

Neither path is “more serious” or “more legitimate.” They’re built for different kinds of support, and which one is right for you depends less on how deep an experience you want and more on whether what you’re looking for is coaching or clinical treatment.

What if you’re not sure which one you need?

A few questions worth sitting with honestly: Am I looking for support and structure around a practice I’m building myself, or do I want a licensed clinician actively treating something specific? Is there a diagnosis, pattern, or clinical concern I want addressed directly, or am I more interested in general wellbeing and consistency? Would I want the option of a medium dose or full journey down the line as part of a treatment plan, even if I start smaller?

If you’re still not sure, that’s exactly what a consultation is for. You don’t have to diagnose yourself before you reach out, and you don’t have to know in advance which container is right.

A middle path worth knowing about

If coaching feels like it’s missing structure and full clinical therapy feels like more than you’re ready to open up right now, there’s a third option: Embodied Microdosing, a 3-month integrative program that combines a structured microdosing protocol with real inner healing work, held in either a small group or one-on-one container. It’s still a coaching and group-support model, but it offers more structure and depth than standalone coaching. If that sounds like the missing middle ground, it’s worth a look.

Wherever you land, take what resonates, and leave the rest. This is your healing, and there’s more than one right way in.

Schedule a free consultation to talk through which path actually fits where you are right now.
